Estate-agent-speak? Or just Owner Prejudice?
One of the most fascinating aspects of running a Kalkan holiday rentals business is the diversity of people's preferences when it comes to exactly where they are choosing to stay in Kalkan.
Of course, at Kalkan Secrets we can cater for all tastes and requirements but it never ceases to amaze us how fixed people's opinions can be about things like location, view, size of pool, modern or traditional design, quiet or busy... the list is endless. All of which is fine if you know what you are looking for - but for relatively new visitors to Kalkan, it's a bit of a minefield, to be honest. Especially if they are looking on some of the Kalkan-focussed social media sites, where owners post details of their own properties in an attempt to attract bookings. They can be a bit... well, biased!
There is a huge amount of what we call "Owner Prejudice" on these sites. For example, an owner of a property in say, Kiziltas will be convinced that someone considering renting accommodation in, say, Kisla must be out of their mind. "You get much better views from Kiziltas than you can anywhere else in Kalkan..." they might say. But that is answered by an owner of a property in Kisla saying: "well, we get better sunsets here and we are closer to the beach clubs." And then an owner in Kalamar Bay will say: "well, we have both." And then someone in Ortaalan will chime in with: "yes, but that's a very long way to walk into town" and the person from Kiziltas will come back with: "yes, but you don't get the views down there."
And so on. And on, and on. Every property owner seems to believe that their property has to be the best place for everyone to rent - after all, they chose to buy it, so surely it must be the best?
Unfortunately, in the frenzy to get bookings, that's when the estate-agent descriptions tend to appear.
- "Yes, it's got a sea view" (as long as you stand on the balcony, balance on one foot, lean over the edge and crane your neck to the right a bit)
- "Well, the pool is shared with eight other apartments but you'll probably be the only ones using it" (as long as that 20-strong hen-party booking in the other apartments doesn't go ahead)
- "The villa pool is huge, you can see from the photos" (taken with a wide angle lens and very close to the edge of the pool to make it look twice the size it really is)
- "It's only a ten minute walk into the Old Town" (if you are a super fit Olympic standard race-walker on steroids, that is)
The point is... no property is perfect and no property is right for everyone. For every pro there is always a con and one of the most enjoyable aspects of running Kalkan Secrets is when we get a enquiry from someone with a list of specifications but no preconceptions, and we can help them to select the property that will genuinely meet their needs, without any Owner Prejudice.
There really is something for everyone in Kalkan but there is no point trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. So, to trot out a few relevant clichés:
- Vive la différence!
- One man's meat is another man's poison
- Each to their own
- Horses for courses
- Different strokes for different folks
But most of all:
- You pays yer money, you takes yer choice!
Let us help you choose your ideal accommodation in Kalkan, sensibly, without any Owner Prejudice. We know the pros and cons of all the properties we list on the website, so all you need to do is ask us if you are not sure whether that glass house in Kiziltas will really suit your requirements, or whether the more traditional villa in the Old Town might turn out to be more your cup of tea. Or coffee.

Can't remember the year that we first came to Kalkan I know it was with Tapestry and I know that we went to the Serra Boutique Hotel. It overlooked the bay and we were dropped at the Meldie and Verdette or Mustaphah would arrive in the car put our suitcases into the boat and we walked down the hill to heaven.
Joy BolandIt was named after Mustaphah and Serafinas daughter Serra and we loved it there. We played dominoes and swam in the pool. There was nothing in front of the Hotel just a view of the bay. Just magic.
The next year we thought we would have the top apartment with its own terrace but Exclusive Escapes kidnapped the Serra and so we went to Yali instead.
We had the roof room there. The beach club wasn't well used and it was ours pretty well all day. Not many people ventured round the headland and the walk in the heat of the day could be very challenging. We had a free Turkish bath at then old Asfiya hotel. We ate at Caretta Caretta again not many people made it round there but the daughter in law always gave us a lift back to Yali if she came across us walking into or from Kalkan.
The next year we bit the bullet and went back to Serra with Exclusive Escapes. We had the top room and loved it . We looked at the Villa next door Ilhan and decided that that was where I was going to be 60.
Lovely 5 bedroomed villa serviced by the Serra and we would pop into the hotel and play dominoes with Verdette and Karlos.
We stayed in a lovely Villa in Kalamazoo Bay and found the local taxi service really useful. Can Can supermarket were fabulous and found us the Worcester sauce needed to put in the Bloody Marie's. Dave rescued a tortoise from the Island Road and we laughed imagining the tortoise to be indignant at being put in the field away from the traffic and probably taking two years to get back to where we found him.
After that we found the lovely Nur apartments. Mor and Dave arrived in one hell of. Thunderstorm .
We had Daybreak two or three times and it was lovely watching the moon appear over the mountains.
Dave found Sahaine in the old Town and that's fabulous too. What isn't fabulous in Kalkan?
Stopped there a few times and then another lovely Villa Sultinyhe where I am lucky enough to be spending my 70th birthday.
Guess what I'm trying to say is we've had a few different choices but not one that we've been disappointed with.
Kalkan doesn't do disappointing as far as were concerned so roll on next week and into my next decade in Kalkan.
Well said that man!
AlisonAnd the same applies to restaurants! And boat trips! And transfer companies!
